Worlds At War
The Basics:
Brand: DC
Name: Laura Kinney
Alias: X-23, Weapon X
Affiliation:X-men
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight, but mostly uninterested in romance
The Cameras Are Easy To Fool
Appearance
X-23 was made and raised to be a living weapon, and it shows. Although in very basic regards, her features are that of an average teenage girl, any semblance of normalcy ends there. She has a physique which would put an Olympic gold medalist to shame and has the mannerisms and expressions of a war veteran; she treats every encounter and situation like a possible combat scenario. Laura does not wear make up or aesthetic accessories unless she is in a position where they might be tactically advantageous. Her hair is straight and lanky, while often mildly unkempt; due to her healing factor, her skin is generally blemish less.

Personality
A girl of few words, the battlefield is where Laura is in her element fully; she knows how to handle almost any situation, and never hesitates. Her confidence is perfect when fighting; she knows her strengths, her weaknesses, her limits, how to gauge those of her enemy, and most importantly how to work with all of them. As such, Laura has a tendency to try and fit every aspect of life into a combat scenario so that she can take control of each situation to the best of her abilities. Consequently, she can be somewhat awkward to others in social interactions.
Socially, Laura tends to come off as cold and disinterested. She cares about some people, no doubt, but her methods of showing this rarely extend beyond the fact that she will make a point of keeping them physically safe. She is especially protective of Wolverine, her genetic donor, however unwilling, who she often considers a less capable version of herself; as she is constantly reminding him, “you heal too slow.”
Fear is something Laura only rarely feels, and never admits to. Pain is little more than a slight annoyance to her, and even death is not as major of a concern as it is for most. Her entire existence being based of the idea of being a soldier, it is the concept of failure that haunts the darkest recesses of her mind. To fail a mission is to fail her only true purpose.
Unlike most allies of the X-Men, Laura has no qualms about killing. Lethal force is, after all, the only permanently effective means of defeating an enemy. She maintains that it is illogical and naïve to try to fight while avoiding killing. She is also quick to anger when challenged and expresses it violently; fighting being the only means of resolving conflicts she is proficient in.

Old Ghosts
History
In a top-secret attempt to continue the Weapon X project, head of operations Doctor Sutter hired a Mutant Geneticist by the name of Doctro Sarah Kinney to clone Wolverine. However, the only genetic sample she had was damaged. Against orders, Kinney went ahead with a plan to create a female clone. Although initially against the idea, Sutter’s protégé Doctor Rice eventually gave in when he saw how much success she was having. However, as punishment for her insubordination, he forced Kinney to be the surrogate mother to the first successful clone. The child she gave birth to was dubbed X-23, due to the 22 failed previous attempts at creating a healthy embryo.
Raised partially by Kinney, and partially by a range of trainers including the viciously abusive Kimura, X-23 was already proficient in assassination skills by the age of 7. At that point, Rice irradiated the girl to prematurely activate her latent mutant abilities. After doing so, he had her bone claws (two in each hand and one in each foot) coated in Adamantium through a similar process to Wolverine’s. This was done without any aesthetic, so as to teach her the pain tolerance levels she would need to use her healing factor to its full capacity… and possibly as a form of revenge for Wolverine having murdered his father. At this time, Rice also developed the “Trigger Scent” which would send X-23 into a murderous berserker rage when she was exposed to it.
Shortly thereafter, Kinney’s niece was abducted. Desperate, she smuggled X-23 out of the facility to save her; she completed the assignment flawlessly, tracking the girl down and killing her abductor before releasing her. In a bid for power, Rice used this opportunity to simultaneously fire Kinney and assign X-23 the mission of killing Sutter and his family. Although she succeeded easily in the mission, she also revealed to Kinney, who was after all her mother if not maternal in the usual manner, that Rice had ordered their deaths. Kinney gave her one last mission; slay Rice, and destroy the incubation pods containing clones 24-50. Although she was successful, Rice exposed her to Trigger Scent just before dieing and X-23 killed her mother in the rampage it induced. Lying in a pool of blood, Kenney used her last breaths to reveal to the girl that her legal name was Laura Kinney and pass her a letter and photos of Wolverine and the X-Men.
Laura then tracked down Kenney’s sister Debbie and her daughter, the same niece who she had saved before, and lived with them as Kenny’s daughter for a number of years. However, later when Debbie’s boyfriend was revealed to be an undercover agent intending to use Trigger Sent to force Laura to assassinate her adopted family, she killed him and consequently had to fight off a group of agents including Kimura to protect Debbie and her mother.
At that point, Laura decided to track down and confront Wolverine. She beat him in single combat, but spared his life in order to explain who and what she was. Apparently, he was already aware and had been informed via a letter of Kenney’s of Laura’s existence years ago. Shortly afterwards, Captain America arrived to arrest and interrogate her. Although he did not agree with all that she had done, he released her simply to avoid letting SHIELD use her as a weapon for their own agendas.
Wandering alone, Laura came into the employ of an NYC pimp. She worked as a prostitute serving his most sadistic clients, as they could cut and mutilate her to an extent that normal girls could not survive. Having lost faith in herself in a world where her only skills seemed to be considered sins, X-23 fell into a deep pit of self-loathing and masochism. It took strong persuasion from a few newfound friends over much time before she was able to pull away from her pimp, who she ended up killing.
Laura worked for a time as a waitress before Wolverine orchestrated a series of events to introduce her to the X-Men. She is currently living at the Xavier institute as a student and trainee X-man. However, due to her nature Laura, much like Logan, tends to take off from time to time and still follows her own rules and agendas.

Yeah well at least I know I'd pick Superman as a running buddy instead of my bullet-riddled ass.

I swear after midnight New York turns into a bad Joel Silver movie.

When she was still a child not yet into puberty, X-23 had killed he mother. As the woman lay dieing in a pool of her own blood, she handed her a letter that changed her life; two points especially stood out in it. The first, and most obvious, was her name; that day, she became not simply a number on an assembly line, but Laura Kinney who was a real person with a family and chance for a life. The second point were words of wisdom; her mother wrote a plea unlike what any of Laura's other victims had given her. Rather than begging for mercy, she demanded it not be given. "Don't forgive me. Don't forgive any of us for what we did. Ever."
No forgiveness. No mercy. Ever. Laura lived by this code.
The door to a supposedly vacant flat ripped off its hinges so violently and swiftly that it impacted with, and summarily shattered, the spine of the man nearest to it. Before he had hit the floor, or any of his comrades had fully registered his death, Laura was through her self-made entrance and had decapitated a second man.
By that point the Purifiers, a group of anti-mutant radicals, realized they were under attack and drew arms. There was a small mutant child, no older than 10 likely, tied to a chair in a corner of the room. Laura made a point of directing her attacks so as to both keep any of his kidnappers from reaching him and to make certain he was not in a position to be hit by a stray bullet meant for her. Having to take him into account slowed down her assault; it took her nearly a minute to cut down all but one of the Purifiers.
Laura swiftly sliced off the boy's ropes before snagging the sole remaining survivor, unable to flee due to her having punctured one of his lungs seconds earlier, by the throat.
"You're free. Go," without removing her glare from the gasping features of the Purifier, she gave a simple curt order to his victim.
"You won't be able to speak for much longer," her full attention came to bear the man twice her size she was easily holding against the wall, "so you need to answer my questions fast."
Two minutes later, having recieved as much information as she was going to get, Laura tossed him aside to suffer a slow death as his lungs filled and he drowned in his own blood. Her job done, she turned to leave.
Then she stopped in surprise. The child was still there, cowering in the corner. Frowning Laura reached towards him.
"Come. Its safe now."
Yet he only recoiled from her extended hand, dripping with blood. The sight of him, hiding there from her while she tried to save him, was a familiar one... except last time it had been she cowering away from a friend. She had been so lost in the world of prostitution and self-loathing, mutilating herself when there were no clients around to do it. She too, had not innitially trusted those who wished to save her; it had taken much time to persuade her to once again value her own freedom.
She didn't have that kind of time. The gunfire must have allerted someone because Laura's keen hearing picked up the sound of approaching sirens even if the boy wasn't yet aware of them. Fast as lightning, her fist shot out and struck the child on the temple with just enough force to knock him unconcious. Laura grimaced, the X-Men wouldn't approve, but he'd be safer this way.
By the time the Police arrived to see, and for many of the new recruits gag at, the massacre in the otherwise empty apartment, the two mutants were long gone into the shadows of the night.
